Purpose and Code of Ethics

Purpose

The purpose of SMC³ Loss Prevention Conference shall be:

  1. To promote loss and damage prevention, customer good will and to create cooperation and harmony between members of SMC³ Loss Prevention Conference.
  2. To encourage members to handle claims in a manner consistent with (1) above and with applicable governing rules, laws or regulations for the handling of loss and damage claims.

Furthermore, the SMC³ Loss Prevention Conference strives to promote:

  1. Prompt and lawful settlement of freight claims.
  2. The study of causes of loss & damage in connection with freight traffic and the recommendation, development, and publicizing of measures for prevention.
  3. Cooperation with the various State and Federal agencies and law enforcement officials in the reduction of the theft and pilferage of cargo.

Code of Ethics

To promote good business practices between SMC³ Loss Prevention Conference members and their business partners, the following Code of Ethics is adopted by the Membership.

  1. The conduct of the membership of SMC³ Loss Prevention Conference with each other, as well as other representatives of the motor common carrier industry and the shipping and receiving public, should be characterized by candor, sincerity and fairness, so at all times to uphold the integrity of SMC³ Loss Prevention Conference, its membership and the transportation industry.
  2. Members of the SMC³ Loss Prevention Conference shall consider fairly and impartially all matters brought before the Conference for study and determination, and shall seek at all times a solution that is in the best interest of the transportation industry.
  3. Members of the SMC³ Loss Prevention Conference shall consider and hold confidential that information imparted to them in the course of discussion or study by the Conference or any of its subcommittees and shall not disclose the same if such disclosure would prejudice or otherwise harm another member, the membership or the transportation industry.
  4. SMC³ Loss Prevention Conference members are responsible for their conduct and will at all times observe this Conference’s Code of Ethics.
